Adaptive Surfing and Wheelchair Accessibility in North Myrtle Beach
Here in North Myrtle Beach, local organizations like Coastal Adaptive Sports, Adaptive Surf Project and The Pilot Club partner with the community to ensure everyone can enjoy our wide, pristine beaches.
Want to surf? You’ve come to the right place! The Adaptive Surf Project was founded in 2013 in the Cherry Grove neighborhood of North Myrtle Beach. Not only do they help fit surfboards adapted to the needs of those who have some sort limitation, including paralysis, down syndrome or autism, but they also train volunteers who can help to take them surfing. The Adaptive Surf Project is not limited in what individuals they help, teaching children and adults with a wide range of limitations.
The adaptive surfboards provided come from local craftsmen like board shaper Todd Sutz. If you’re in the market for a new board or want to learn more about how adaptive boards are made, check him out at Island Inspired Board Company.
Throughout the year, the Adaptive Surf Project hosts surfing events like Wheels to Surf. During this unique event, Adaptive Surf Project is hoping to take more than 40 individuals surfing in one day. This is only possible with the help of volunteers – and Wheels to Surf hopes to sign up 100 volunteers to make this event possible.
