HELPFUL RESOURCES

The Champion Autism Network (CAN) got its roots right here in the Grand Strand. This nonprofit autism awareness organization, founded in 2012, believes in a world where all people living with autism can live, work, and play without judgment, guilt, or worry. In addition to sensory-friendly events and raising awareness, CAN is the Grand Strand's premiere ambassador for the Autism Travel Club.

The Autism Travel Club makes it easy to find Autism Ready travel destinations, hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Membership is only $10 a year and provides benefits like special offers and discounts. The Autism Travel Card was created to provide families with a quiet and dignified way to let participating businesses and organizations know that they’re an autism family. North Myrtle Beach is one of the Autism Ready destinations.

THINGS TO DO

HEAD TO THE OCEAN FOR A BEACH DAY

The beaches of North Myrtle Beach offer plenty of room to relax, spread out, and move at your own pace. We recommend going early in the morning or later in the evenings when the beach is less crowded to alleviate any extra stress from the surroundings. In peak season, consider visiting during midday on a Saturday before guests check in and during hotel turnover times. Beyond sunscreen, beach towels and proper shade, earmuffs can help block out the sound of the waves and any other background noise.

BOOK AN OPEN PLAY SESSION AT STAR ACADEMY

If other attractions and activities become too stimulating for kids, reserve an open play session at STAR Academy, a sensory learning center in the heart of North Myrtle Beach. STAR stands for Sensory, Teaching And Recreation. The academy offers open play sessions where children can play with anything from foam pits to sensory panels and blocks to books. Need a break? A “chill out” spot provides cozy seats, LED strands and more. Open play is available Monday through Friday with some weekend sessions offered depending on private party schedules. Admission is $24 for a 2-hour morning or afternoon session.

SPOT SEA CREATURES AT RIPLEY’S AQUARIUM

Partnering with Champion Autism Network, Ripley’s Aquarium hosts sensory-friendly hours. See over 10,000 exotic sea creatures in a music-free environment with welcoming lighting. Noise canceling headphones are available at guest services where you can also pick up a special Selfie Scavenger Hunt sheet and turn in for a prize. The aquarium offers special Autism Travel Club rates.
