The Best Events of Summer 2018

Check out Main Street for the Music on Main concert series. While relaxing the day away with loved ones might be the top priority of your summer beach vacation, you'll want to set aside some time to enjoy our events. After all, North Myrtle Beach and the greater Myrtle Beach area are known for hosting plenty of family-friendly festivities during the summer, and 2018 is no exception. We’ve compiled a list of some of the area’s most popular events and festivals so you can make the most of your family’s trip to North Myrtle Beach.

Here on the Grand Strand, every day in May is a Military Appreciation Day. But on Memorial Day weekend, the biggest celebration takes place: the Military Appreciation Days Parade! Just a short drive down Highway 17, this patriotic event at The Market Common is a fun way for the whole family to show off their American spirit. After the parade, attendees can enjoy lunch at the Family Picnic at The Market Common’s Grand Park. Enjoy live entertainment while we honor the men, women and families of our Armed Forces.

If you love live music, head to the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Drive for the free Music on Main concert series. Every Thursday evening through the end of September, an exciting band takes the stage for a night of family-friendly entertainment. Trust us: you won't want to forget your dancing shoes!.

Learn to dance the Carolina Shag, which started in North Myrtle Beach. On select Fridays throughout the summer, you can find more live music at the Sounds of Summer concert series. Held at the Sandhills Bank Amphitheater in the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex, these festive concerts are great for the whole family. Better yet, they're completely free to attend.

As the birthplace of the Carolina Shag, we love to celebrate our music heritage—so why not join in? Give your kids the opportunity to learn about this special tradition with the Society of Stranders (SOS) during the Junior SOS on July 17–22. Here, they can learn the Shag and meet other young, aspiring dancers. (Don’t worry, Mom and Dad: there are plenty of places for you to cut a rug. Try out Fat Harold’s, which offers free Shag lessons all summer.)

After a day spent relaxing on the beach or exploring some of the area’s unexpected adventures, head to Barefoot Landing. Here, you’ll find something for everyone: delicious waterfront dining, charming shops and award-winning theaters and entertainment venues like the House of Blues and the Alabama Theatre. Make plans to go to dinner and a show, then stick around after for Barefoot Landing’s spectacular (and free!) fireworks display, which takes place every Monday night until Labor Day, as well as holidays.

As you spend your 4th of July on the beach, be sure to look to the sky for Salute from the Shore. This magnificent flyover features military planes from yesteryear and the modern aircraft of today. If you’re staying in the Cherry Grove neighborhood of North Myrtle Beach, you’ll be right around the corner from another dazzling fireworks show at the Cherry Grove Pier that evening.

Share your photos on social media using #ExploreNMBIf you’re looking for a quieter, more slow-paced event, spend a night under the stars with your family at Movies @ McLean. Featuring free kid-friendly movies on select Fridays through mid-October, Movies @ McLean takes place at peaceful McLean Park and is the perfect opportunity spend some extra time to with your kids. Movies begin 15 minutes after sunset, so your kids are sure to love staying up past their bedtime (they are, after all, on vacation, too!).
