Start your Spring off with a fresh slate and a new appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds you in North Myrtle Beach. This time of year our abundant and pristine landscape is bursting with a life and energy that will make you feel refreshed and revitalized.
Explore the undeveloped Waites Island, where wildlife and saltwater marshes reign supreme. Here, you’ll be greeted by loggerhead sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins, osprey, blue herons and the elusive bald eagle among many others. Waites Island is the perfect place to escape from the crowds and reconnect with Mother Nature, and one of the few places you can ride horses on the beach in South Carolina!
Another place that is worth exploring is Vereen Gardens, which boasts 115 acres of coastal forest, tidal marsh and Intracoastal waterfront. One of the best kept secrets in North Myrtle Beach, Vereen Gardens is home to a variety of wildlife, as well as trails and boardwalks that weave through the park and along the scenic marshes.
One of our favorite ways to explore the salt marshes, waterways, inlets and islands is by paddle board or kayak. There are several outfitters who can take your family on a kayak or paddle board tour in North Myrtle Beach while you’re here (you can even try your hand at kayak fishing)!
If you prefer to explore on foot, look no further than the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. Best known for hosting sporting events from all over the country, this 350-acre park is also home to three nature trails that weave through the property (click here for a map). On these trails, you will enjoy a 25-acre lake and a 10-acre meadow, and explore a protected wetland called a “Carolina Bay.” Carolina Bays are endangered, naturally forested wetlands that typically have an oval shape and a northwest-southeast orientation and whose origins have been debated for years.
There are a few Carolina Bays in Little River as well, specifically at La Belle Amie Vineyard, where you can explore a historic tobacco plantation-turned vineyard, and wander the grounds and sample wine while you listen to live music. Click here to learn more about Carolina Bays, and be sure to look for Venus flytraps, black bears and vegetation unique to this unique feature!
To see wildlife in a more contained and controlled environment, make your way to Alligator Adventure, where you can see rare and exotic animals up-close and truly experience the beauty of nature.
There is so much that is waiting to be seen and experienced—and it is all right here in our own back yard. See for yourself. Plan an adventure to North Myrtle Beach today, get outside, and Just Coast®.
